Powder coating is an advanced method of applying a decorative and protective finish to various types of metal (and other surfaces thanks to the advancement of this product). This technique is widely used in various industries as well as in homes. Differing dramatically from other paint techniques, powder coating offers a near flawless appearance, which surpasses normal paint finished in durability and effect finishes.
Powder coating, unlike liquid paint does not need a solvent to keep both the binder and filler parts in suspension form, making it eco friendly and safer to use. There are generally two types of powder coating techniques that are used.
- Thermoplastic powders: will re- melt if heat is re-applied
- Thermosetting powders: will not re- melt under heat
Either one of the above types of powder coating creates a hard finish that is stronger than liquid paint. Powder coating is used on various products and parts across a broad spectrum of industries.
- Car industry
- Common household objects: bicycles, furniture, braai’s etc
- Non- metal products: advancement of powder coating allows for non- metal surfaces to be covered. These include things such as wooden furniture, kitchen cupboards etc.
The benefits of using powder coating
Powder coating is longer- lasting and offers a more colour- durable finish to any type of metal. Surfaces covered in powder coating are less vulnerable to chipping, fading and scratching and surfaces stay brighter for longer (compared to liquid paint and other paint techniques.) The colour selection is broader and is available in various finishes:
- High gloss
- Glitter finishes
Considerate towards the environment
Whilst liquid paint and other paint techniques contain pollutants in their solvents, powder coating does not, as it contains no solvents.
Powder coating is cheaper than other traditional painting techniques because of waste reduction as well as the elimination of volatile organic compounds (solvents that are released into the air when paint dries.)
With powder coating becoming an ever popular paint technique in not only industries but in homes too, many people are appreciating its benefits and final appearance.
